At present, in terms of optical fiber access network technology, narrowband access is gradually replaced by broadband access, finally achieving fiber to home. Broadband fiber-optic access networks have become inevitable, and industrial-grade PON technology will become a technical hot spot for broadband access networks in the future due to its multi-service, low investment, and easy maintenance characteristics.

What is an optical access network?

Optical fiber access network refers to the access network in which the transmission medium is optical fiber. Optical fiber access networks can be technically divided into two categories: Active Optical Network (AON) and Passive Optical Network (PON).

Active optical network can be divided into SDH-based AON and PDH-based AON;

Passive optical networks can be divided into narrowband industrial-grade PON and broadband industrial-grade PON.

What role does the access network play in network construction?

The information network is composed of a core backbone network, a metropolitan area network, an access network, and a user premises network. The access network is at the bridge of the metropolitan area network/backbone network.

At present, science and technology are advancing by leaps and bounds, and a large number of electronic documents are constantly being produced. With economic globalization, the process of social informatization has accelerated, the Internet has been widely popularized, data services have grown violently, and the types of telecommunications services have continued to expand, which has expanded from a single telephone service to multiple services. Kind of business. Narrowband access network has become a bottleneck restricting the development of broadband networks. The access network market has a large capacity. In order to meet the needs of users, new technologies continue to emerge. Access network is the focus and key to the development of national information infrastructure. Network access technology has become the focus of attention and investment hotspot of research institutions, communication manufacturers, telecommunications companies and operating departments.

Advantages of industrial PON

1. Able to provide transparent broadband and low-cost transmission capabilities.

2. Compared with active optical network, its installation, opening and maintenance operation cost is low, and the system is more reliable and stable. Therefore, PON system is being widely used in access network.

3. Industrial-grade PON adopts a point-to-multipoint access mode, so the infrastructure costs of laying optical fibers between the central office and users are shared by users, which can increase the return on network construction investment. Compared with the method of configuring end-to-end optical fiber for each user, the industrial-grade PON equipment that improves business for the same number of customers is smaller and takes up less space in the central office.

4. Industrial-grade PON supports both traditional services (traditional telephone service POTS, analog TV) and broadband services (IP voice transmission, IPTV, broadband Internet access, etc.).

5. Industrial-grade PON supports all residential users (using POTS, analog TV and data services) and many commercial users (using T1/E1 and Ethernet services) to share an access network (including physical layer and protocol layer) without using different The access networks provide services for them separately, thus reducing the number of scattered access networks.

With the advancement of network technology and the popularization of broadband services, optical fiber access is becoming more and more common, while pipelines and optical cable resources cannot be expanded indefinitely. The use of industrial-grade PON technology saves a lot of optical cable resources and effectively solves this problem. ETU-LINK optical module manufacturers can provide EPON optical modules and GPON optical modules for optical access networks. With the continuous improvement of PON technology and the continuous reduction of optical device costs, the technical advantages will become more and more obvious.
